The skills required to be a good manager are independent from the skills required to be a good individual contributor. Many people who are exceptional in their individual contributor roles are promoted to management without knowing if they will enjoy it or be good at it. Without proper leadership experience and management training, a newly promoted manager is not set up for success. The key is understanding your career path options, your strengths and weaknesses, what you like and don't like about your job, and your career goals.
